A Masterclass in Design Thinking!

Faculty Higher Secondary School, North Guwahati had the distinct privilege of hosting Udaya Kumar Dharmalingam, Professor, Department of Design, IIT Guwahati, and the celebrated designer of the iconic Indian Rupee symbol (₹).
The session was truly engaging, thought-provoking, and highly informative. Through an interactive and quiz-based approach, Prof. Udaya Kumar captivated the audience and encouraged students to observe, question, and think beyond the obvious. One of the key highlights of the session was his lucid explanation of the difference between Art and Design—demonstrating how art often expresses ideas and emotions, while design focuses on solving problems and creating meaningful user experiences.

The session also emphasized the importance of observation, curiosity, experimentation, and learning from failure as essential ingredients of innovation.
The programme was organized with the objective of promoting Fine Arts and Design Education among students, helping them explore emerging career pathways in creative disciplines. The interaction inspired young minds to appreciate design not merely as aesthetics, but as a way of thinking that can transform ideas into impactful solutions.

Small Lights, Big Impact

It is often observed that, despite knowing what is necessary for our own protection, we tend to overlook the simplest safety measures. Reflectors, though small and easily available, play an immensely crucial role in ensuring the safety of cyclists on the road. However, they are frequently ignored, leaving individuals vulnerable and unknowingly placing their lives at risk. Keeping this in mind, we, the students of Faculty Higher Secondary School in association with American Field Services ( AFS) undertook a small and meaningful initiative. A team of nine students, guided by two teacher coordinators, visited IIT Guwahati to spread awareness about road safety. Through this campaign, we reached out to people directly, helping them understand the significance of visibility while cycling, especially during low-light conditions. As part of our effort, we installed reflectors on the bicycles of five pedestrians, taking a simple but impactful step toward enhancing their safety. Though modest and trivial in scale, the campaign was carried out with sincerity, leaving us with the hope that even the smallest actions can contribute to a safer and more responsible community
